Adaptations for customers with disabilities

If you have a disability, we or your co-op will do all we can to adapt your home to help you enjoy a comfortable and independent life.

We may be able to fit small adaptations such as stair or grab rails for you for free, depending on where you live.  Or, we can also try to find funding for other minor adaptations such as  improving access to your home.

For more expensive alterations you may be able to apply for a grant but this will depend on your income, benefits, savings and investments and what your Occupational Therapist recommends.

Co-op Homes can assist with grant applications for works such as bathroom or kitchen replacements, stair lifts or hoists.

Be aware that some properties will not be suitable for adaptation; if this is the case we will do all we can to help you find more suitable accommodation.

If your Occupational Therapist recommends that you should have an adaptation in your home we may be able to help. If the work costs less than £500, we or your co-op will consider arranging for it to be done for you. However, funds are limited so the sooner you let us know the better as requests will be prioritised.

If the cost is likely to be over £500 you can apply to your local authority for a Disabled Facilities Grant. Your Occupational Therapist can help you do this. There is no guarantee that you will be awarded funding by the local authority but we will do all we can to help.

If you feel you need an adaptation to your home or want more information about the funding available, then please contact us and we will arrange for one of our team to visit you and discuss options.
